CRS is an abbreviation for cytoreductive surgery. It is just the excision of all cancerous lesions from the abdominal cavity. The operation, however, is not simple and should only be conducted by doctors with extensive experience. CRS is not the same as normal abdominal cancer surgery. Patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis (disease that has spread in the peritoneal cavity) are rarely offered surgery because they are thought to have unresectable disease, or cancer that cannot be removed surgically. CRS, on the other hand, has been demonstrated to be efficacious in a small number of individuals with peritoneal carcinomatosis. Our Stony Brook surgical oncologist's goal is to remove all visible malignancy from the abdominal cavity. Because most surgeons have minimal surgical experience with peritoneal carcinomatosis, finding doctors with years of experience in this scenario is critical.
