The cervix, or lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina, is where cervical cancer cells grow. The majority of cervical malignancies are caused by various strains of the human papillomavirus, a sexually transmitted disease (HPV). When exposed to HPV, the body's immune system often prevents the virus from doing any harm. In a small percentage of people, however, the virus persists for years and helps some cervical cells turn into cancer cells. Usually, there are no symptoms or warning signs of early-stage cervical cancer. Symptoms and indicators of advanced cervical cancer include bleeding from the cervix after sex, during menstruation, or after menopause. Vaginal discharge that is watery, crimson, possibly heavy, and odorous, etc.
