Some cancers are extremely difficult to treat. Peritoneal carcinomatosis refers to cancer that has spread to the lining surfaces of the peritoneal (abdominal) cavity from primary colorectal cancer, ovarian cancer, gastric cancer, appendiceal cancer, or mesothelioma and pseudomyxoma peritonei. Despite numerous recent advances in chemotherapy, the overall chance of chemotherapy being curative remains low, and the side effects are difficult to tolerate for the patient. When these cancers are confined to the peritoneal cavity, candidate patients may benefit from Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC). The term intraperitoneal refers to the delivery of treatment to the abdominal cavity. The term Hyperthermic Chemotherapy refers to the process of heating a chemotherapy solution to a temperature higher than normal body temperature. Before administering HIPEC, the surgeon will remove all visible tumors that can be removed throughout the peritoneal cavity using standard surgical methods. This is referred to as cytoreductive surgery. Following cytoreductive surgery, the surgeon will administer HIPEC treatment in the operating room.
