Esophageal cancer is a type of cancer that develops in the esophagus. The esophagus is a long, hollow tube that runs from the throat to the stomach. It is the pathway by which food enters the mouth and travels to the stomach for digestion. Esophageal cancer can develop at any point along its path. This cancer affects more men than women. Esophageal cancer does not exhibit any symptoms until it has grown large enough to make it difficult to pass food through it. Cancer treatment is tailored to the patient's specific needs. The entire esophagus may be removed during surgery, known as esophagectomy. If a patient is unable to have the entire esophagus removed, an esophageal stent may be placed across the tumor block to allow eating.
