Cancer of the head and neck frequently begins on the surfaces that line the throat, mouth, and nose. It is most common in the cells that make up the epidermis, the skin's outermost layer. It is also known as squamous cell carcinoma at times. Head and neck cancers can start in the salivary gland, muscles, sinuses, or nerves, but these areas are less common than the throat, mouth, and nose. The most important risk factors for head and neck cancer are alcohol and tobacco use. Cigarettes, cigars, smokeless tobacco/flavored tobacco, and pipes have also been linked to head and neck cancer. Drinking any alcoholic beverage, such as liquor, wine, or beer, raises the risk of developing cancer of the mouth, voice box, and throat. Human Papillomavirus (HPV), a common sexually transmitted virus, is linked to the majority of cancers in the oropharynx (which includes the base of the tongue, tonsils, and soft palate). Lip cancer is typically caused by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays, such as those emitted by the sun or artificial UV light used in procedures such as tanning beds. While working in a chemical factory, exposure to certain chemicals such as formaldehyde, wood dust, nickel, and harmful chemical rays can increase the risk of developing nasal or nasopharyngeal cancer.
