Treatment of advanced tumors is difficult due to the extent and location of spread (difficult-to-reach sites). Previously, conventional cytoreductive surgery followed by intravenous chemotherapy was the treatment of choice for cancers that had spread to the abdomen or peritoneum. However, one of the major challenges with IV chemotherapy administration is that, while it can reach distant organs via the blood, it only reaches the peritoneal cavity insufficiently. As a result, the cancer cells are not completely destroyed. In recent years, however, a novel chemotherapy procedure combined with surgery has given hope to millions of people suffering from late-stage cancers that have spread to the abdominal cavity. This treatment modality, known as HIPEC and also by common names such as chemo wash, hot chemo, or sugar baker procedure, aims to improve not only survival rates but also the quality of life for these patients. HIPEC is not the same as traditional chemotherapy, which is typically administered intravenously or orally. Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC) is a novel treatment method that delivers concentrated chemotherapeutic medicines directly into the patient's abdomen at a high temperature. For various types of cancer that have originated or spread inside the abdominal cavity, HIPEC is usually combined with abdominal surgery. As a result, HIPEC is also known as CRS-HIPEC.
